There exists a legend of a three-legged prophet youkai who emerged from the seas, one that told of a period of bountiful harvest, followed by one of disaster and disease. It told the people to copy its image to use as a protective charm during that period, before disappearing back into the sea. That youkai was known as the “Amabiko”.
Few years later, a variant (subspecies?) of that youkai, the Amabie, was discovered engaging in an eerily similar pattern. The Amabie was eventually placed under the collective category of “Underseas Prophet Youkai”. alongside the Arie, Honengame, Umidebito, Jinja-hime, and of course, the Amabiko.
Indeed, it was the power of prophet youkai such as the Amabie that had averted many disasters and plagues in the past, via artistic depictions of the creature that were shown to those affected by various ailments and evil spirits to cure them. Of course, there were others like the ones listed previously, but the Amabie was the most well-known of them, so their image was used most often.
Amphitrite, as well as her seven sisters, are a special kind of Amabie.
They felt that there was more to the Amabie race than acting as toadies for those humans who do nothing but take their power for granted, and so they went rogue, seeking a way to put humanity in their place.
But how were a group of mere Amabie meant to accomplish such a huge feat? Their desire to find an answer to this question led them to seek assistance from a sea witch, who had offered the sisters a contract. It stated that the sisters would work as the witch’s underlings for 10 years, but in return, something great would be promised for them. The sisters, enticed by the “promise” and wanting to rebel against humanity, begrudgingly accepted the deal and became the witch’s servants, doting on his every need.
However, this didn’t turn out to be nearly as grueling as expected. They were surprised and moved by how kindly the witch had treated them. The sisters, initially working with the witch out of rebellion, ended up serving him out of genuine loyalty, and have considered doing so long after their 10 years are up. However, it’s currently unclear as to whether or not the sisters are aware that their master has differing ideas from them on how to deal with mankind’s “imprudence”....
Her master treats all the sisters equally, but she believes herself to be just a little closer to him than the others. Actually, she’s quite smitten with him, so she puts a lot of effort into bolstering his brand amongst the sea folk, and makes a big fuss towards anyone who mocks him.
Ultimately, despite doing her upmost to defend her master’s honor, the shrine maiden had considered her but an obstacle, and ruthlessly shot her down. If anything, her master is, like, waaaay out of her league anyway, so it probably wouldn’t have made too much of a difference if she actually succeeded in convincing anyone.
